New Associate Dean Appointed in Engineering

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Aug. 16, 2000) - Jack Alanen, a senior scientist at Litton Systems, Inc., in Woodland Hills and a part-time Cal State Northridge lecturer, has been appointed the new associate dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science.

Alanen, who served as chair of CSUN's Computer Science Department in the early 1980s and has taught on a part-time basis at the university since 1985, started his new position at Northridge this month.

Laurence Caretto, dean of the college, said he welcomes Alanen's appointment.

"I remember Jack's service as a faculty member and chair in the computer science department at CSUN in the 1980s," Caretto said. "I am pleased to welcome him back on a full-time basis and I look forward to working with him to enhance the quality of our educational programs."

Among the many projects Alanen, a Long Beach resident, worked on while at Litton was a joint Canadian-American Air Force effort to modernize their military air traffic control systems as well as several other projects that included designing software and assessing its effectiveness afterwards.

Alanen said he was "delighted" to return to CSUN full-time. He said he has spent the summer meeting with outgoing Associate Dean Sharlene Katz learning the intricacies of his new job.

Alanen said he also plans to teach a computer science course each semester. "I find that itıs the best way for me to continue learning," he said.
