Judy Shepard to Speak about Hate Crimes
As Part of CSUN's 'Week of Activism'



WHAT:
Judy Shepard, whose son was brutally beaten and left to die because he was gay, will talk about how to make the community safe for everyone, regardless of their race, sex, religion or sexual orientation as part of Cal State Northridge's "Week of Activism."

The student government, Associated Students Inc., has invited the campus community Sept. 20 through 27 to take part in a series of events designed to increase political awareness on campus.

WHO:

Shepard's son, Matthew, a 22-year-old college student, was beaten, pistol-whipped and left to die tied to a fence in rural Wyoming in 1998 by two men who targeted him because he was gay. Since her son's death, Shepard and her husband, Dennis, formed the Matthew Shepard Foundation to help carry on Matthew's legacy and prevent future hate crimes.
