Play Traces Family's Struggle in the U.S.

The acclaimed play "La Victima," which chronicles the struggles of a Mexican mother and her children in the United States, opens next month at Cal State Northridge.

Performances are scheduled at 8 p.m. on March 15 and 16 and at 5 p.m. on March 17, in the new Performing Arts Center in the university's student union.

"La Victima" was written by El Teatro de la Esperanza, a San Francisco-based national theater company, and has been performed across the country. Cal State Northridge professor Anamarie Garcia will direct.

The play traces the history of Mexicans in the United States from the early 1900's. It focuses on the drama of a mother and her children who, although tolerated in good times for their contribution to the cheap labor pool, are deported in bad times when jobs are scarce.

The play's subject matter, the mass deportations of Mexicans, has a current correlation in California's political climate and Proposition 187, Garcia says.

"La Victima" is being presented by the university's School of the Arts Educational Equity Program and Department of Theatre in cooperation with the Educational Opportunity Program and the School of the Arts Dean's Office.

Tickets are $9; $7 for Cal State Northridge faculty and staff; and $5 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available at the university's Associated Students Ticket Office. General admission tickets are also available at all TicketMaster outlets.
