Stutts' appointment becomes effective July 1.
"Her vision for interdisciplinary, interprofessional and community-based collaborative programs will place the college among the new leaders in higher education reform," Provost Louanne Kennedy said.
Stutts said she was honored by the appointment.
"I look forward to continue working with what I consider some of the best faculty in higher education," she said.
Stutts joined the university's faculty as an instructor in the Department of Kinesiology in 1965 after receiving her masters in physical education from Utah State University. By 1977, she was a full professor in the department and had earned her doctorate in physical education from the University of Southern California. She served as chair of the Kinesiology Department from 1988 to 1995.
In 1995, Stutts was appointed interim dean of the School of Communication, Health and Human Services. The school is being broken up this summer with the communications portion moving to the new College of Arts, Media and Communication. The remaining departments will form the new College of Health and Human Development.
In addition to a variety of campus positions, Stutts has also served on several state, national and international committees including the President's Advisory Committee for Physical Education of College Women, the U.S. Olympic Academy IV, and the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee.
