Students to "Shutdown" Campus Over Affirmative Action

Worried about the impact that the elimination of affirmative action would have on their lives, hundreds of Cal State Northridge students plan to "shutdown" the university Wednesday, November 8, in a campuswide rally to draw attention to their concerns.

University president Blenda J. Wilson said the campus will remain open during the rally, but urged faculty and staff to use the event as a point of discussion with students throughout the day.

The rally and a march is scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Oviatt Lawn in the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

The attacks on affirmative action and questions raised by the proposed state ballot measure, California Civil Rights Initiative, have prompted the university to host a series of forums and debates on the issues. The first was a debate Tuesday between state Sen. Diane Watson and CCRI campaign manager Joe Gelman. Other forums are planned for later this year.
