Spend an Evening With Artie Shaw at Cal State Northridge

The public is invited to spend An Evening with Artie Shaw on Friday, October 27, at 8 p.m. in the new 500-seat Performing Arts Center at Cal State Northridge.

The legendary "King of Swing" will appear in person to introduce his Academy Award-winning documentary "Time Is All You've Got," a retrospective of his life.

Following the film, Shaw will talk about jazz, the Big Band era, jazz in the movies, and other entertainment issues. A question-and-answer session will follow.

Shaw was a pivotal figure in the evolution of Big Band music during the 1930s and continued to shape the sound of jazz even after his decision to quit performing in the 1950s.

"Artie Shaw: Time is All You've Got" reveals Shaw as he is today and includes excerpts from in two earlier motion pictures, "Dancing Coed" (1939) and "Second Chorus" (1940). The film was recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature of 1986.

Tickets for An Evening with Artie Shaw are $25 for general admission; $20 for faculty and staff; and $15 for students and seniors. All proceeds will benefit the Music Department's Scholarship Fund.

Tickets may be purchased at TicketMaster or on campus at the Associated Students Ticket Office, which is accessible from the Lindley Avenue/Nordhoff Street Information Booth. For more information, call the Music Department at (818) 885-3180.
