CSUN GRADUATES 1st NURSING CLASS

The average nursing student at Cal State Northridge is 35-years-old, has 17 years of work experience, juggles a full time job, a spouse, two children and hours of homework.

Twenty-one such students will be recognized for their achievement May 30 when they become the first class graduating with baccalaureate degrees in nursing from the Health Science department.

They are part of a two-year program for working registered nurses with associate degrees pursuing advanced training in focus, community health and leadership/management.

"We have a better understanding of the total patient, their community and their surroundings," said student Eileen Vrbanac.

The convocation ceremony will recognize the students and special guests. Mitzi Parker, who founded the program in 1993, and Dr. Ellen McFadden, program director, will be guest speakers.

One student, yet to be announced, will be named the recipient of the RN to BS Nursing 1996 Scholarship Award, in honor of a 26-year-old nursing student who passed away last year.

Graduation is at 8 a.m., with a special convocation ceremony at 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Grand Salon of the University Student Union, 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
