Cal State Northridge Introduces the Members of Its Fundraising Board

Cal State Northridge introduces the newest members of is fundraising foundation who's goals are to raise the private funds which provide the "edge of excellence" for the university's programs.

The 22-member board is made up of men and women representing the economic, geographic and cultural diversity of Los Angeles, and in particular the San Fernando Valley. Among its members are a former Los Angeles city councilwoman, a former newspaper publisher, a respected Valley historian and author and several prominent lawyers and business people

The board meets quarterly to develop fundraising strategies. The new board met for the first time in September and has another meeting scheduled for Dec. 14 at the university.

Below is a list of the members of the California State University, Northridge Foundation:

David J. Auger - Currently a consultant, Auger served as publisher of the Los Angeles Daily News from 1989 to 1994. He has served on the board of directors of the Valley Industry and Commerce Association (VICA); Boy Scouts of America ; Valley Presbyterian Hospital; Constitutional Rights Foundation; Pacific Lodge Boys' Home; and the Economic Development Corp. of Los Angeles County. Auger has received the Jewish National Foundation distinguished Tree of Life Award, the Valley Interfaith Council Humanitarian Award and the Valley Barons Award.

Ralph A. Courtney, III - Courtney is a deputy public defender for Los Angeles County. He serves on the board of trustees of the First United Methodist Church in Reseda and is a member of the board of the Granada Hills High School Boosters Club. Courtney teaches law and constitutions law in Simi Valley School District Adult Education and UC Santa Barbara Extension.

Gary C. Dickey - Dickey is a partner with Deloitte & Touche. A 1972 graduate of Northridge's School of Business Administration and Economics, he serves as chair of the Business Outreach Committee of the foundation, and also chairs the Business Relations Committee of the Council of Business Advisors for the School of Business. He has been a member of the university's President's Associates Board of Directors since 1988 and served as president in 1991 through 1993.

David W. Fleming - Fleming is a member of the international law firm of Latham & Watkins. He is president of the Board of Fire Commissioners for the city of Los Angeles, and chair of Valley Presbyterian Hospital. He is past chair of VICA and the Los Angeles County Blue Ribbon Children's Services Planning Committee. He served as director of Los Angeles 2000 Partnership and co-chaired Housing Task Force, LA 2000. He chairs the drive to raise $2.5 million for Northridge's School of Education.

Richard E. Gilbert - Gilbert is a partner in the law firm Freeman, Freeman & Smiley. He has been a longtime member of the foundation board and a lecturer for the Division of Business and Industry Services (Continuing Professional Education) for the university. He was the winner of their Excellence in Teaching Award in 1991.

John R. Golisch - Golisch, an accountant and managing partner of Arthur Andersen & Co., is past president of the foundation. He began his term as president in 1988, and has been a member of the board since 1985. He is a member of the School of Business Administration and Economics Advisory Committee. In 1990, the President's Associates Community Leadership Award was presented to Arthur Andersen & Co. The company has completed a pledge of $100,000 for the first endowed faculty Fellowship in Accounting to the School of Business campaign. In 1985, Golisch received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the university.

Myrtle Whitsett Harris - Harris is a longtime member of the board. She has chaired the Foundation Endowment Committee and served on the University Investment Advisory Board. It was through her efforts that the W. P. Whitsett Foundation established the university's first endowed chair. Harris is the secretary-treasurer of the W. P. Whitsett Foundation, secretary of the Myrtle L. Atkinson Foundation and trustee, manager of the Whitsett Family Trust. She serves on the Occidental College Board of Trustees, the Stanford Hospital Chaplaincy Finance Committee and is a member of the World Service Council Executive Committee of the YMCA. The Stanford University Mother's Club Scholarship is named in her honor.

Gregory Jones - Jones is regional vice president of State Farm Insurance Companies. He serves on the board of directors of United Way of Ventura County, Junior Achievement of Los Angeles, Ventura County Diversity Council, and The Wellness Community. He is the founder and past president of 100 Black Men of Sonoma County; he formerly served on the Board of Directors of 100 Black Men of America. In 1994, he received the Empowerment Achievement Award.

Stephen C. Kolakowski - is Senior Vice President and Treasurer of Underwriters Reinsurance Company. He joined the Foundation Board of Directors in 1993 and serves as chairman of the Investment Committee. Mr. Kolakowski received his B.S. in Business Administration from Cal State Northridge in 1979. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Insurance Account and Systems Association, and California Society of Certified Public Accountants.

F. Anthony (Tony) Kurtz - is the chair of the California State University, Northridge Foundation. He joined the Board in 1988 and has served as Chairman of the Finance Committee plus has served on the Nominating, Endowment and Development committees. Mr. Kurtz is chair of the School of Business campaign committee and is a member of their Council of Advisors. He received his B.S. in Accounting from Cal State Northridge in 1963 and his wife Virginia graduated in 1966 from the Cal State Northridge School of Education. The F. Anthony and Virginia Kurtz Lecture Room in the School of Business building is named in honor of their gift, which is one of the largest gifts from alumni in the School's history.

Albert M. Lapides - Cal State Northridge alum, is President of Replacement Parts Industries. He joined the Foundation Board of Directors in 1985 serving as secretary for several years and has chaired the Nominating Committee; he is currently the Vice Chair. Mr. Lapides received his M.S. in Business Administration from Cal State Northridge is 1968. Mr. Lapides has served on the Board of Directors of the President's Associates since 1976 and was president in 1979. He is a Director of the Northridge Hospital Foundation and chairman of the Major and Planned Gifts Committee.

Philip S. Magaram - is attorney/principal of Valensi, Rose & Magaram PLC. The Marilyn Magaram Center for Food Science, Nutrition & & Dietetics was founded in memory of Marilyn Magaram in 1991 with generous donations provided by Mr. Magaram and the Joseph Drown Foundation. He serves on the Honorary Board of Directors of the Marilyn Magaram Center. He is a member of the Board of Directors and Secretary of the Joseph Drown Foundation. He is a founding member of the School of Communication, Health and Human Services Dean's Roundtable and received the School's James W. Cleary Award at the 1993 Commencement. He is vice chairman of the National Planned Giving Committee of the Arthritis Foundation and Chairman of the Planned Giving Committee of the Southern California Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation.

Georgia L. Mercer - formerly served as Mayor Richard Riordan's area representative to the West San Fernando Valley. She has served as Director of Communications and Director of Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood, Los Angeles. She is past president of the Board of Directors of the Valley Presbyterian Hospital Foundation and served on their Board of Directors for several years. Ms. Mercer was a founding member of the Dean's Roundtable for the School of Communication, Health and Human Services. In addition, she was the founding president of a new reform congregation in Woodland Hills.

Catherine Mulholland - devotes her time to lecturing, writing regional history and public service. She joined the Foundation Board of Directors in 1989 and has been on the Cal State Northridge Community Advisory Board since 1981 and served as president in 1984. Ms. Mulholland is the granddaughter of William Mulholland, chief engineer of the Owens River Aqueduct, and is among the fourth generation of her mother's family to have lived in the San Fernando Valley. Her list of publications include Calabasas Girls, Owensmouth Baby: The Making of a San Fernando Valley Town and she contributed to the anthology, California Childhood with her "Recollections of a Valley Past."

Charles H. Noski - is a senior vice president and chief financial officer for the Hughes Electronic Corporation. He earned his B.S. in Business Administration and M.S. in Accountancy from Cal State Northridge. He currently serves as a trustee for the Southern California chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. He is the member of several professional organizations as well as the Los Angeles chapter of the American Defense Preparedness Association.

Anthony (Tony) J. Partipilo - has a private law practice in the Valley. He has earned two B.A.'s from Cal State Northridge--History and Political Science. He was elected to the Foundation Board in 1987 and has served on the Development and Nominating Committees. Mr. Partipilo has served on the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association and served as president in 1985-86.

Christine Partipilo - is a Senior Technical Writer at BancTec Technologies and is married to Tony Partipilo. She graduated in 1982 with a B.A. in history from Cal State Northridge. She is currently the president of the Alumni Association and joined the Alumni Association Board of Directors in 1985. She serves as a volunteer for her children's school-based activities and for religious education at their local church.

Joy Picus - Former Los Angeles City Councilwoman, is very involved in the community. Ms. Picus serves on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Library Foundation, Jewish Homes for the Aging and is co-vice president of the Friends of the Observatory Board. She is chair of the University of Wisconsin Foundation Committee in Los Angeles and serves on the boards of United Way Government Affairs Council, League of Women Voters Educational Fund, plus many others. She received MS Magazine, 1985 woman of the Year award; Temple Aliyah, 1994 Woman of the Year award; and Women in Business Achievement Award in 1988.

James David (Dave) Power, III - is founder and president of J.D. Power and Associates, an Agoura Hills-based automotive marketing information firm. He is a member of the School of Business Council of Business Advisors, serving on the Educational Programs Committee. Mr. Powers is active in Big Brothers, Junior Achievement, DECA, Northwood University, and Holy Cross Alumni Association. He received the Automotive Hall of Fame's 1991 Distinguished Service Citation and in 1992 the Northwood University Outstanding Business Leader award.

Don R. Rudkin - Alumnus, is a partner at Deloitte & Touche's Woodland Hills office. He is Chief Financial Officer of the Foundation Board and chairs the Finance Committee. He joined the Board in 1988 and has served on the Endowment and Investment Committees. He received his B.S. in accounting from Cal State Northridge and earned his M.B.A. at CSU Long Beach. As an assistant professor in Cal State Northridge's School of Business, he taught classes in cost accounting and management information systems. His wife Carlye is a graduate of Cal State Northridge's School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Otis L. Spencer - is Medical Group Administrator at Kaiser Permanente, Woodland Hills. Since 1988, he has served on the Board of Directors of the President's Associates as Treasurer and First Vice President, as well as chairing committees for their dinner dances and golf/tennis tournaments. In the fall of 1991, Kaiser Foundation made a $182,223 gift to the School of Communication, Health and Human Services to support its partnership with the University to offer a B.S. degree in nursing.

John M. Tangney - is a partner at Price Waterhouse's Woodland Hills Office. Mr. Tangney has served on the President's Associates Board of Directors since 1990 and has been president of the President's Associates Board for the past two years. He co-chaired their golf/tennis tournament in 1993. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts and the Los Angeles Chapter of the California Society of CPA's.

Darlene Van Dam - is a 1974 Cal State Northridge graduate with a B.A. in Psychology. In 1975 she received her Standard Elementary Partial Credential in Psychology from Cal State Northridge. Ms. Van Dam served on a focus group for the recent Strategic Planning Study for Cal State Northridge. She has owned three businesses and now consults in computer programs for elections. She serves on the Board of Directors of the San Fernando Valley Child Guidance Clinic.
