LAUSD RECOGNIZES CSUN INTERIOR DESIGN PROGRAM

Walk up to the Joan Elam Children's Center and you'll hear the usual buzzing from babies, toddlers and pre-school children at play. What's unique about this daycare center is that it's located at Monroe Senior High School in North Hills.

Roberta K. Mauksch, Cal State Northridge professor of Family Environmental Sciences, was recently recognized by the Los Angeles Unified School District with a certificate of appreciation for her efforts in the design of the facility.

Mauksch, director of CSUN's Interior Deisgn Program, and her students designed for the interior and exterior of the children's facility and the surrounding playground.

The facility was dedicated in February 1996, and is in full operation providing a safe and secure place where teen-age parents can leave their children in good care while the parents complete their high school education.

The daycare center at Monroe is the second community project Mauksch' students have worked on. A different group of students designed the interior of One-Joy, a local center that meets the needs of the elderly and young children.
