Students from Southern California high schools will have the opportunity to work with two of Northridge's Music Department Faculty members in preparation of the performances.
Paul Smith, Cal State Northridge's director of choral music, is coordinating the event. Directing the Honor Jazz Band will be Gary Pratt, known for his award-winning Matador Marching Band, Wind Symphony and Jazz "B" Band. The Honor Jazz Choir will be conducted by Bill Lyons, whose Jazz Vocal Ensemble gained prominence when it sang on national television.
"It's a wonderful opportunity to work with these high school students because they are such a talented group," said Lyons.
Under the guidance of The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) and the NARAS Foundation, the Grammy in the Schools program presents an opportunity to showcase the nation's most talented high school instrumentalists, vocalists and music teachers. Members participate in a variety of Grammy-week activities and many are awarded music scholarships.
Each year, regionally selected students are chosen to become members of the National All-American High School ensembles. Students are then given the opportunity to perform with guest artists such as Kenny Loggins, Clark Terry, Aaron Neville, Branford Marsalis and All 4 One.
