Cal State Northridge Appoints New Dean

Cal State Northridge has named William Flores, associate dean of the School of Social Science at Cal State Fresno, as dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Flores will assume his new post on Aug. 1.

"I am thrilled that Dr. Flores is coming to Northridge," said Louanne Kennedy, CSUN's vice president for academic affairs. "He is intellectually gifted and an experienced administrator who is knowledgeable about California and the CSU.

"I am excited to have the opportunity to work with Dr. Flores on the issues confronting higher education and CSUN," Kennedy said.

Flores received his bachelor's degree from UCLA and his master's and Ph.D. from Stanford University, all in political science. He has published extensively in a variety of political science journals and has been an active participant in conference dealing with the challenges of multiculturalism.

Flores has served as associate dean of the School of Social Science at California State University, Fresno since July, 1994. He was a Rockefeller Fellow in the humanities at City University of New York during the 1993-94 year, and served as acting dean of the School of Social Science at CSU Fresno in 1993.

He held earlier academic appointments at CSU Hayward, De Anza College and Santa Clara University. Since 1991 he has held an appointment as Visiting Scholar/Associate Fellow at the Center for Chicano Research at Stanford University.

Flores is replacing Ralph Vicero, who retired this year after 27 years at Cal State Northridge -- the last six as dean of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
