Dramatic Magic This Summer at CSUN

Young people can explore a maze, travel back in time to medieval England, or experience fairy-tale this summer at Cal State Northridge's Teenage Drama Workshop.

The workshop launches its 38th year July 18 with the premiere of Adam of the Road, followed by Mr. A's Amazing Maze Plays and The Water Life. Two evenings of staged readings are also planned later this summer.

Adam of the Road, a musical adapted from a Newbury Award-winning book, chronicles the adventures of Adam as he searches for his father, a minstrel in medieval England.

The production, for children ages 6 and up, is directed by Irene Silbert in the university's Studio Theatre on July 18, 19 and 26 at 7 p.m.; July 20, 26, 27 and Aug. 3 at 11 a.m.; and July 25 and Aug. 1 and 2 at 2 p.m.

Mr. A's Amazing Maze Plays, written by English playwright Alan Acykbourn, follows Suzi and her dog, Neville, as they explore a 26-room mansion with the help of the theater audience.

The play for children ages 5 and up is directed by Doug Kaback in the university's Little Theater at 2 p.m. on July 25, 31 and Aug. 1 and 2; at 11 a.m. on July 26, 27 and Aug. 3; and at 7 p.m. on July 25 and Aug. 2.

The Water of Life, based on a Grimm Brother's story, follows three children as they set out to find the Water of Life to save their dying father, the King. Directed by Judy Weldon, the musical opens in the university's Campus Theatre at 7 p.m. on July 31 and continues at 2 and 7 p.m. on Aug. 1 and 2.

All three theaters are located in the newly refurbished Speech- Drama Building on the southwest corner of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

The Teenage Drama Workshop is sponsored by the university's Department of Theatre and the Bureau of Arts Research and Development. It is the longest running teen program of its kind in the nation.

It is a six-week theater workshop for children between the ages of 12 and 18 that combines daily instruction to focus on developing the dramatic tools of the body, voice and mind with an elective course in either improvisation, musical theater or playwriting. The workshop is led by CSUN faculty, local secondary school drama teachers and professional actors, directors and designers currently working in Los Angeles theater.

All tickets are $5. For ticket information, call the USU Ticket Office at (818) 885-2488 or 677-2488. For other inquiries, call the CSUN Theatre Department at (818) 885-3086 or 677-3086.
