Northridge Hosts Debate on Affirmative Action

The rhetoric concerning affirmative action has escalated over the past year as a group of Californians have proposed a statewide initiative to eliminate the policy.

Cal State Northridge officials hope to provide some insight into the matter Tuesday, Oct. 31, when they host a debate on the California Civil Rights Initiative featuring state Senator Diane Watson and Joe Gelman, campaign manager for the initiative.

The initiative would prohibit the state from "granting preferential treatment to any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin" in public employment, public education or public contracting. Its passage would have major consequences for California State University, Northridge.

The debate will be from 12:15 to 1:45 p.m. on Oct. 31, in the Grand Salon of the University Student Union near the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. It is open to the public.

The debate is being sponsored by the university's Presidential Advisory Board on Nondiscrimination and Affirmative Action. It is the first in a series of events planned by the board to provide faculty and students an opportunity to learn about the initiative and discuss affirmative action in public higher education.
