Sports Camp Offers Summer of Fun for Physically Challenged Youth

Cal State Northridge is accepting registrations for a unique sports camp that gives physically challenged young people an opportunity to compete athletically.

The Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp for Physically Challenged Youth is the only one of its kind in Los Angeles. All counselors and sports instructors are persons with disabilities who serve as role models for their young charges.

"It's much more than sports that we offer," said CSUN kinesiology professor Nick Breit, camp director. "We hope to give the campers a sense of independence so that they will go on to college and whatever else they want to do with their lives."

The camp will be June 24 - 28 on campus.

Breit said a special family day will be on June 28 when campers will demonstrate what they've learned and compete. A barbecue lunch will be provided by the Northridge Kiwanis Club.

The camp is free for first-time attendees. Returning campers must pay $150 fee. Breit said arrangements will be worked out for those who cannot afford it. "No one is turned away because of funds," he said.

Campers much be between the ages of 7 and 21, have good use of their upper extremities (e.g., to swing a tennis racket), have independent or supervised bathroom and feeding skills; and have a bathing suit, towel and water bottle. Transportation is free.

The registration deadline is May 31. A late fee of $15 will be charged after that date. Registration is limited to 60 .
