INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON IMMIGRATION AND AFTERMATH OF PROPOSITION 187

Cal State Northridge is hosting a day-long conference on the aftermath of the passage of Proposition 187 and related anti-immigrant measures on Saturday, Oct. 14, in the Shoshone Room at the university's Satellite Student Union (corner of Zelzah and Lassen) in Northridge.

The conference, "International Perspectives on Immigration: The Aftermath of Proposition 187," will provide an opportunity to analyze the local and international repercussions of the California voter-approved initiative. The conference is being organized by the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN) of Los Angeles.

Check in for the conference is at 9:30 a.m. The first session, which will examine the local impact of and community response to Prop. 187, is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with presentations from Dr. Manuel Pastor, economist with the International Public Affairs Center at Occidental College; Viviana Andrade, director of the immigration program for the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund; Gilbert Cedillo, general manager of Local 660 of the Service Employees International Union, and Joe Hicks, executive director of the Multi-Cultural Collaborative. Author and television commentator Ruben Martinez will moderate.

The afternoon session, which will examine the initiative from an international perspective, is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Panelists will include Dr. Cuauhtemoc Cardenas, leader of the Democratic Revolutionary Party of Mexico; Dr. Ruben Zamora, leader of the Democratic Convergence Party of El Salvador; and Dr. Carlos Carnero, member of the European Parliament.
