Publications

Gary Anderson, Dennis Halcoussis, Anton Lowenberg (all Economics) and Linda Johnston published an article titled "The Role of Alternative Medicine in the Health Care Market" in The Journal of Medical Licensure and Discipline, vol. 86, no. 2, January 2000.

Cynthia Desrochers (Elementary Education) had an article titled "Multi-Purpose Lecture Breaks" published in The Teaching Professor, vol. 13, no. 10, December 1999.

Adam Gifford Jr. (Economics) had an article titled "Being and Time: On the Nature and the Evolution of Institutions" published in the Journal of Bioeconomics, vol. 1, no. 2, November 1999.

John Meligrana (Geography) had his article titled "Toward Regional Transportation Governance: A Case Study of Greater Vancouver" published in Transportation, November 1999, pages 359-380.

Jack Solomon (English) published the third edition of "Signs of Life in the U.S.A. Readings on Popular Culture for Writers" with Sonia Maasik. He also had two op-ed columns published in the Los Angeles Times Valley Edition titled "The Power of Cool‹and of Not Knowing What it is" on January 23, and another titled "Forget E.T.: Phone Home for a Reality Check" in March.

Bettina Pedersen (English) had her article titled "Complicating Gender: Contrastive Rhetoric and Reader Response in Teaching Victorian Prose Works" published in Nineteenth-Century Prose, 26.2 (Fall 1999) pages 24-36.

Jerry Shaw andPaul Skolnick (both Psychology) had their article titled "Weapon Focus and Gender Differences in Eyewitness Accuracy: Arousal Versus Salience" published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology," 29, 2328­2341.

Richard Squires (Geological Sciences) had an article titled "Upper Paleocene to Lower Eocene Marine Megafossils in the Uppermost Santa Susana Valley, Southern California" published in the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County Contributions in Science, 1999 (no. 479, 38 pp.). He also had an article titled "Middle Eocene Brackis-Marine Mollusks from the Matilija Sandstone at Matilija Hot Springs, Ventura County, Southern California" published in the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County Contributions in Science, 1999 (no. 480, 29 pp.).

Honors/Awards

Dorothy Barresi (English) won the Grant Prize in the 1999 Los Angeles Poetry Prize competition sponsored by the Los Angeles Poetry Festival. She read her poetry at UC Riverside on February 10 as part of the Writers Week celebration.

Elaine Blyler (Family Environmental Sciences) was appointed to "California Women, Infants and Childrenšs Community Nutrition Rotation," a state task force that strives to enhance the quality of community nutrition rotations in Women, Infants and Children agencies and to promote careers in public health nutrition.

Larry Caretto (Engineering & Computer Science) was nominated for CSUNšs Bautzer Faculty Advancement Award. He was presented at the annual District VII Conference of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education in December 1999.

Jose Ceja (Physics major) accepted a summer research position as part of the National Science Foundation/Research Experience for Undergraduates program run by the National Solar Observatory in Tucson, Ariz. Ceja will work with Harry Jones at NSO/Tucson on solar infrared observations.

William Jennings (Finance Real Estate & Insurance) was an associate editor for the Journal of Insurance Issues, vol. XXII, no. 1, Spring 1999.

Joseph Launie (Finance Real Estate & Insurance) was editor for the Journal of Insurance Issues, vol. XXII, no. 1, Spring 1999.
