Review of University's Intercollegiate Athletics Program Nearing a Conclusion

The four-member team of officials from other NCAA institutions is slated to visit CSUN from Tuesday to Thursday, May 11-13. The visit will include team members interviewing a range of campus officials and athletic program participants about the state of intercollegiate athletics on campus.

The peer review team visit is one of the final steps leading to a decision by the NCAA on whether to certify CSUN's intercollegiate athletic programs. Periodic certification is now required of all NCAA Division I institutions under a new regulatory system the NCAA launched in 1993.

Jeanette Mann, the staff director for the university's recently completed NCAA Certification Self-Study Report, said one major purpose of the NCAA peer-review team visit is for its members to compare their own first-hand impressions with those put forward by the university in its self-study report.

According to the NCAA's certification handbook, the peer review team's three main functions are to verify the accuracy and completeness of the university's self-study report, to verify broad-based participation in the self-study, and to evaluate the self-study relative to the NCAA's operating principles.

Ultimately, the NCAA's Committee on Athletics Certification will render a decision on certification for CSUN's intercollegiate athletic programs. That will be based on CSUN's self-study report, the peer-review team report, a possible CSUN written response to that report and any peer- review team reply.

The NCAA team members for CSUN will be Jane Moore, a professor emeritus of Auburn University; Jack Wilkinson, faculty athletic representative at Northern Iowa University; Mikki Baile, senior associate athletics director at Old Dominion University, and Orby Moss, athletics director at Georgia State University.
