Former Dean Accepts Interim Provost Appointment

Linda Bain, provost and vice president for academic affairs at San Jose State University from 1995 until her retirement in August 2000, has accepted the interim appointment of provost and vice president for academic affairs at Cal State Northridge.

Bain, former dean of Cal State Northridge's School of Communication, Health and Human Services, succeeds Louanne Kennedy, who retires as provost and academic affairs vice president on August 31.

Cal State Northridge President Jolene Koester said the search process for a permanent provost and vice president of academic affairs is underway. The search committee, chaired by Faculty President Michael Neubauer, includes Edward Alfano, professor of art; Deborah Chen, associate professor of special education; Josh Lodolo of Associated Students; Mary Pardo, professor of Chicano/a studies; and William Toutant, dean of the College of Arts, Media, and Communication.

Final candidates are expected to visit the campus for extensive campus-wide interviews in the early fall, said President Koester, with a decision on the regular appointment to come before the end of the calendar year. The permanent appointee should assume his or her duties by January 2004.

"I am delighted Dr. Bain will be joining the University's executive team," said Koester. "Her experience as provost at San Jose State‹and her familiarity with the CSU system and, particularly, the CSUN campus‹will clearly benefit her work at the university."

Bain is happy at the prospect of serving Cal State Northridge again. "My impression is that the campus is thriving, growing and accomplishing a great deal," she said.

Prior to her 19881995 term at Cal State Northridge, Bain was associate dean for research at the University of Houston's College of Education. The interim provost earned her Ph.D. in physical education and learning theory from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
