Fall 2012 Ensemble Audition Information

 

 

CSU Northridge Jazz Ensembles

Auditions are scheduled for Monday, August 27th @ 4:00 PM in CY 159 for:
• Big Bands
• Combos
• Vocal Jazz (for voice, see information under vocal jazz)

Audition Procedure - Instrumental Jazz Ensembles

1. Perform a (jazz) selection of your choice that can best demonstrate your jazz experience both technically and musically.  It is expected that Jazz Majors perform this selection from memory.  Non – majors may select a jazz tune from the “Real Book” - it need not be memorized.
2. Sight Reading
3. Woodwind players will demonstrate their experience with all doubles (it is not required that non-jazz majors double)
4. REQUIRED TUNE (Jazz Majors only) “Shaw ‘Nuff”, by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie [key of Bb concert, mm=132, with intro].
5. Improvisation (required of Jazz Majors)

Special requirements for drummers

Drummers should be prepared to play the tune in various styles and be prepared to solo over form.

• Rated among the top 5 Collegiate Bands at the 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012 Reno Jazz Festivals with unanimous superior ratings

JAZZ "C" BAND
Fall 2012 Rehearsal Schedule: Tues -Thurs 3:00PM to 4:15PM

• Performs campus concerts and local jazz festivals

Audition Procedure – Vocal Jazz Ensemble:

Monday August 27th – Jazz Vocal Ensemble Auditions 7:15pm

• Students should have the song, “Skylark” prepared, in addition to an additional jazz song of your choosing.
• There will be sight-reading, as well as some ear training included as part of the audition.
