Placement Tests for New Students
Entry Level Mathematics Exam
All CSU students who are not exempt are required to take the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) exam. Exemptions are explained on page 407 of the CSUN Catalog. Students who did not pass the ELM should contact the Developmental Math Office for information about what remedial math course to take.
Mathematics Placement Tests (MPT)
CSUN uses a test called the MDPT to determine eligibility for enrollment in Math 103, 104, 105, 150A, and 255A, and must be taken within the year preceding enrollment in these courses. This test, also referred to as the Mathematics Placement Test (MPT) does not replace the ELM requirement, but is used in addition to the ELM to determine eligibility for enrollment. Students planning on taking the exam are encouraged to go to the MDPT WEBSITE for a list of topics and sample questions.
Starting with the Fall semester 2007 the MPT (see previous paragraph) is mandatory for all students who want to enroll in Math 103. For more information about the exam, see: MDPT, and the CSUN Testing Center.
