Whether you are a prospective major in mathematics, a faculty
member, or just a casual visitor to this site, we hope that we
will provide the information that you seek. As mathematicians
our objective is to advance the discipline among all
constituents through teaching and research. This website is
part of this effort by informing you about the opportunities
the Department of Mathematics has to offer to you. A dedicated
staff, thirty seven tenure-track faculty members, and a host of
adjunct faculty and teaching associates are striving to help
you. The Department offers undergraduate and Master's degrees
in mathematics and applied mathematics leading to a wide
variety of career opportunities, including in secondary and
higher education, business and industry. The Department has a
long history of supporting its students in many ways, including
external grants, job opportunities as tutors and Teaching
Associates. Currently approximately half of our graduate
students are fully or partially supported by the Department and
grants. Many of our undergraduate students also receive
support. Our faculty maintain active research programs that
have let to regular publications in mathematics. Many of our
faculty actively involve both graduate and undergraduate
students in their research to find synergy between instruction
and scholarship and to provide excellent opportunities to our
students.

Mathematics and Secondary Education Faculty have
received an award of $1.5 million from the National Science
Foundation to establish the CSUN NSF
Teaching Fellowship Program, which is a
collaboration between the College of Science and Mathematics
and the Michael D. Eisner College of Education. This program
aims to prepare Teaching Fellows, who are
post-baccalaureate and STEM professionals with strong math
backgrounds, to become expert secondary teachers, and
Master Teaching Fellows, who are
mathematically talented teachers, to become leaders in their
field. All Fellows will earn stipends and/or
salary supplements during a five-year period
as they work closely with a developing community of CSUN
faculty, local teachers leaders, and preservice teachers. By
program's end, all Fellows will be knowledgeable about
innovative teaching strategies and capable of mentoring
teachers in their schools and districts (and beyond).
Mathematics and Science Faculty have received an award of
nearly $500,000 from the National Science Foundation to
establish a Robert Noyce
Scholarship Program in the College of Science and
Math. This program will offer two-year scholarships to
outstanding juniors getting a B.A. in the Secondary Teaching
Option and one-year scholarships to post-baccalaureate
students earning single subject mathematics teaching
credentials.
The Math Department has received nearly $1.9
million MCTP
grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF)
to increase the number of underrepresented minority students
from our region who enter Ph.D. programs in the Mathematical
Sciences.
The Math Department hosts a GK-12
project to place graduate mathematics students in
local middle and high schools. The Division of Graduate
Education at NSF funds this $1.65 million grant.
The California State University System has
applied for a new NSF grant, the "Louis Stokes
Alliance for Minority Participation Bridge to the Doctorate
Program". This program will provide financial
support for qualified graduate students. California State
University Northridge is currently recruiting candidates for
the first cohort of students in this program, starting their
classes in Fall 2009. For more information please follow the
