After sixteen years of teaching mathematics at three high schools in Arizona and California, Professor Hughes began teaching at CSUN in 1970 for the Departments of Secondary Education and Mathematics. His favorite field of mathematics is its history. That is why he earned a Ph.D. in the History of Mathematics at Stanford University.

He has created a history of mathematics web site and teaches courses in the history of mathematics at CSUN: Math 390A for elementary school teachers, Math 490 for secondary school teachers and Math 620 for Option II M.S. candidates.

Fall semester 2001, Prof. Hughes will be teaching Math 490. He wrote the textbook for this course because there is no other text that is aimed specifically at future secondary school teachers of mathematics.
