Early Start Math FAQ's

Notes for all ESM courses

At the end of your CSUN Early Start Math course you will receive either Credit (CR), ESM Requirement Met (RP), or No-Credit (NC) in your EMS course. In addition your placement in Developmental or GE Mathematics will be determined by a numerical score (ESM Score) that your instructor will record. Credit in ESM does not necessarily mean improved placement in Developmental or GE Mathematics. There are four possibilities:

ESM Outcomes
ESM Score Reason Math Placement and next steps ESM Course Grade
0
Failure to complete sufficient work to show minimum required effort.
Placement based on prior ELM score.
NC
1
Completion of sufficient work to show minimum required effort.
Placement based on prior ELM score. No further action necessary.
RP
LCS-48
Failure to complete sufficient work to show minimum required effort and passing the course content for math 092.
Placement based on ELM equivalent score of 34 (eligible for CSUN Math 093). Results sent via email. Student must revise Fall 2013 schedule.
CR
50
Failure to complete sufficient work to show minimum required effort and passing the course content for math 093.
GE-Level Mathematics. Results sent via email. Student must revise Fall 2013 schedule.

Notice: Even if you start in ESM 096L I, you can still place into GE level math by the end of the summer! This will not require any further registration or cost. Get an EARLY start on ESM.

Early Start fee waivers will be available for those demonstrating need. California residents who applied for financial aid and have an Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) of $5,000 or less are eligible for a fee waiver for any ESM course.

The current fee estimate is $182 per unit. An additional campus fee of $2.00 may be required. If you park on campus, you must purchase a parking permit.

If you are a CSUN destination student and place out of all your developmental requirements this summer, we are saving spots for you in the following GE level classes. You will be able to register for these classes using a permission number provided by your ESM instructor.

ESM Course Descriptions

ESM 096LI

Prerequisite: None. This is a self-paced diagnostic and preparation for ELM material designed for students with ELM scores below 34. Topics covered include fractions, decimal notation, percent, real numbers and algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities. Credit (CR), Record Participation (RP) and No Credit (NC) only. Students earning CR in ESM 096LI are eligible to enroll in Math 093. Students who participate sufficiently in lab activities but have not made insufficient progress for improved math placement receive a grade of RP. RP does not make students eligible for GE level mathematics classes nor MATH 093, but does satisfy the Early Start requirement. Neither CR nor RP will apply toward the baccalaureate degree but will apply as 1 unit of University Credit. This course is not open to students who are currently enrolled in or who have received credit in MATH 092.

Topics covered include fractions, decimal notation, percent, real numbers and algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities. Credit (CR), Record Participation (RP) and No Credit (NC) only. Students earning CR in ESM 092 are eligible to enroll in Math 093. Students who participate sufficiently in lab activities but have not made insufficient progress for improved math placement receive a grade of RP.
