Fall 2008 Liberal Studies Conference

.

Liberal Studies Conference, “Reaching for New Heights”, an opportunity for professional growth for Liberal Studies majors….

On Saturday, October 18, 2008, the Liberal Studies Program held its second annual conference at CSUN. Approximately 150 Teacher Preparation and General Studies Option students attended a variety of workshops on topics such as Working with English Learners and their Families, I Want to Go to Graduate School.  Where Do I Start, Hints, Tips & Strategies: Helping Students with Disabilities Succeed, the Power of Hands on Science in the Elementary Classroom, and School Counseling: The Hardest Job You’ll Ever Love, to name just a few. The keynote address was delivered by Ms. Dawna Countryman, 2007 California Teacher of the Year.  Her address was inspirational and at the same time offered practical strategies for future educators.  The presenters consisted of CSUN alumnae, LAUSD teachers and administrators, and CSUN faculty and staff. Here are some of the comments shared by the attendees:

I really enjoyed the Meet a Principal and an Elementary School Teacher workshop.  It gave me insight to what I am to expect in the near future.

Awesome presenter with a lot of personal stories to really enhance the description of a counselor.

The Hints, Tips, & Strategies for students with Disabilities workshop was very helpful.  I am hoping to look into using some of these strategies in my classroom for my special needs student.

Fun games! I learned good strategies to use in the classroom.  Thank you.

I really enjoyed having a hands on approach to teaching science.
