Internet Relay Chat (IRC) Workshop
Information for PC Users

Before your students can chat online, the computer they use must be java-enabled.  Here are the instructions they will need:

Before you can enter The Virtual Chat Site (or whatever you call your site):

  1. First you must enable Java in your Browser. Some earlier versions of Browsers may not run Java. You need to have at least Windows 95/98 and Netscape 4.0

  3. Pull down "Edit,"and click on "Preferences." Then click on "Advanced." Make sure Java is enabled.

Once the computer to support java, connection is easy.  Read the instructions and then click on the door which follows to enter our practice site. (I've inserted the link in the door.)
     
    Type in your real name in the "Nickname" box. 
     Leave the "Username" as is, with "java" in it. 
     Type in your email address in the "Email
     Click on the "Connect" Button.

     
  1. After you enter the IRC Practice Site Channel, in order for anyone to see your words, you must hit the "enter" button after you type in what you want to say. You will not see your name , but everyone else will so don't type in the brackets < >with your name. Review some simple rules of netiquette before  you join the virtual writing site.
  2. Enter The IRC Practice Site.
