The Chicano and Chicana Studies Major

Chicano/a Studies offers three distinct options in the major. These are:

· The Single Major in Chicano/a Studies
· The Double Major in Chicano/a Studies and a second major in another discipline
· The Social Studies Program which is a B.A. in Chicano/a Studies and a pre-credential program in Social Studies

OPTION I: The Single Major in Chicano/a Studies

The single major in Chicano/a Studies is a 45 unit program designed to give the student special preparation in the discipline of Chicano/a Studies through a combination of lower and upper division core requirements. The lower and upper division core requirements are complemented by three options (Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts, Education) from which the student must take at least 6.0 units from two of the options.

The Major is particularly suited for those students preparing to enter the fields of teaching or social work. It is also a preparation for those intending to enter various graduate and professional fields such as history, sociology, psychology, library science, political science, social welfare, law, urban studies, and others.

OPTION II: Double Major

The double major is for students with two declared majors leading to a B.A. degree. (A student may not major in two majors, one of which leads to a B.A. and the other to a B.S. For the double major, the major in Chicano Studies is 33.0 units. This reduction in units is intended to give the student a better opportunity to complete both majors.

OPTION III: Social Studies Program
(Major in Chicano/a Studies and a pre-credential program)

This program is for students wishing to teach in the high school or middle school levels. It is an inter-disciplinary program that includes courses in History, Political Science, Pan African Studies, Geography, Education, and Chicano/a Studies. It will prepare students in a variety of Social Science content areas.
