The Master of Arts Program provides advanced
interdisciplinary learning opportunities in the field of Chicana
and Chicano studies. A
core objective is to prepare students to teach at the community
college level and to enter a variety of doctoral programs. It
is also for individuals already in the work and professional areas
who wish to better prepare themselves to take leadership in society.
Further, the MA program gives the mid-career student a
means of enhancing, renewing, and enriching the profession for
teachers, counselors, and administrators.
Requirements for the Master of Arts in Chicana
and Chicano Studies
A.
Requirements for admission to classified graduate status:
1.
A bachelor’s degree in Chicana and Chicano Studies or at
least 21 upper division units in the discipline or the equivalent.
2. A written
examination in the discipline of Chicana and Chicano Studies
3. An assessment
of the applicant’s oral and written proficiency in Spanish
4.
Fulfillment of general university requirements for advancement
to be classified graduate status and for advancement to candidacy.
5. The Graduate
Record Examination (GRE)
B. Requirements for the Degree
1. A minimum of 30 units of approved graduate work comprised
of the following:

Chicana and Chicano Studies 500: Seminar
in Chicana/o Studies
-
An additional minimum of 15 units of 500
level courses in Chicana/o Studies
-
Fifteen units of approved 400 or 500 level
courses in Chicana/o Studies
2. A
comprehensive written examination followed by an oral examination
in the discipline of Chicano Studies or a dissertation.
The topic of the dissertation must be approved by the coordinator
of the Graduate Studies Program and by the student’s Advisement
Committee.
