Dr. Patricia Born, Professor of Finance, received her Ph.D. in Economics from Duke University in 1994. Professor Born joined CSUN in 2000, and currently teaches Principles of Insurance, Risk Management, and the Gateway course. Before this, from 1994-1997, she worked in the Center for Health Care Policy and Research at the American Medical Association, while also teaching in the evening MBA program at DePaul University. In 1997 she joined the Finance faculty at The University of Connecticut, where she taught insurance and health care finance. Her research interests include insurer profitability, managed care finance, tort reform, and physician payment. She has published research in the Journal of Risk and Insurance, Risk Management and Insurance Review, the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, the Journal of Legal Studies, the Brookings Papers on Microeconomic Activity, and Health Affairs. She currently serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Insurance Issues, Risk Management and Insurance Review, and the RIMS-Tech Bulletin, as well as on the board of the Western Risk and Insurance Association and on the Technical Advisory Council for the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS). Dr. Born is co-director of the Center for Insurance Education and Research.
