Connect to CSUN's Wireless Network - Windows XP & 2000

CSUN is proud to offer 802.11b/g WiFi wireless Ethernet service to all CSUN Students, Faculty and Staff in many areas across the campus. There is currently wide industry support for the 802.11b and 802.11g wireless standards and most laptop computers and pocket PC's can easily gain the capability to use the CSUN wireless network (if they don't have it built-in already).

Working wirelessly provides greater flexibility and mobility for information access than ever. Collaborate and communicate more easily in class and in meetings without the burden of Ethernet cables running everywhere.

Connecting to the wireless network at CSUN is quick and easy. Follow these steps to get connected now!

  1. PURCHASE a 802.11b or 802.11g Wi-FI compatible wireless network adaptor card if your laptop or other peripheral "network" device does not already have one installed.

Wireless adaptor cards can be purchased from most computer stores including:

·        Best Buy

·        Fry’s Electronics

·        CompUSA

·        Any computer store of your choice

  1. INSTALL your Wireless Network adaptor Card by following the installation instructions that came with the wireless adaptor card.

NOTE:  During the installation process, if you are prompted to input the “Wireless Mode” and “SSID” or “Network Name”, input the following information:

Wireless Mode = Infrastructure Mode

SSID/ Network Name = csun    (all lower case letters)

*If you are prompted to input a authentication KEY number, leave that field blank.  CSUN does not require a "key" to authenticate wireless network users.

  1. FIND your wireless adaptor card’s  MAC address.

Option 1:  Locate the Physical address printed on the Wireless Adaptor card.  It will appear in one of the following formats:

·        00-30-ab-15-58-de

·        00:30:ab:15:58:de

·        0030ab-1558de

Option 2:  If your wireless adaptor card is built-in to your lap top, locate the Physical address by doing the following:

·        Turn on your lap top computer with the wireless network adaptor card installed.

·        Click the ‘Start’ button

·        Click ‘Run’

·        Type ‘cmd’ in the ‘Open’ field.

·        When the DOS window opens, type ‘ipconfig /all’ at the prompt

Note: There is a space between the word ipconfig and /all

·        Write down the “Physical Address” located next to the section which contains the “Description” with either ‘WLAN’ or ‘Wireless’.  See below example.

Example:

  1. REGISTER your wireless adaptor card's Physical address to your campus account via CSUN’s Campus Account Utility
  • Visit the Campus Account Utility at https://www.csun.edu/account
  • Input your CSUN Campus Account ‘User ID:’ (example: cro41601 or chris.olsen.23@csun.edu) and your 'Password'.
  • Once logged in, check the box labeled ‘Wireless Registration
  • Input your wireless adaptor card's Physical address in either of the following formats and click 'ADD ADDRESS':
      • xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
      • xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx

  1. RESTART your lap top.  Click the 'START' button and select 'RESTART'.
