Homework 12: Due November 29 in class.

  1. Watch Graphic Multiplyer and explain why this method works. You should relate it to what you have learned in this class.
  2. Explain what the student has to know to be able to do the calculation 637 x 43. Go back to the beginning of the class and describe the sequence of topics students need to understand before they can do this problem. Describe how each topic relates to the problem.

 

Homework 11: Due November 15 in class.

  1. Section 7.1 pages 283-286: Problem 5
  2. Section 7.2 pages 292-295: Problems 5, 7, 11, 12, 16
  3. Section 7.3 pages 298-299: Problem 5
  4. What is the rate of members of United States House of Representatives to people living in the United States? First express your answer as a ratio 1:x, then express it as y:1. What do x and y in your mean? (You need to find the population of the United States and the number of members of the United States House of Representatives. Use a calculator if necessary.)

Homework 10: Due November 8 in class.

  1. Section 6.4 pages 256-258: Problems 5, 6, 15
  2. Section 6.5 pages 264-266: Problems 11, 13

  1. Please finish this by Tuesday: Read Section 6.3 in class and finish 6H in the Activity Manual.

Homework 8: Due October 25 in class

  1. Check out the graphs in the LA Times article Million-plus club. What information is supposed to be displayed? Do the graphs really show the information as well as they should? Can you fix what's wrong?
  2. For Section A of the Math 210 Practice Final answer all problems except 6,7,10,11.
  3. For Section C of the Math 210 Practice Final answer problems 1, 2, 3, 8.

  4. Watch the Khan Academy video on Subtraction. What is good about the presentation? What would you possibly improve or do differently?

 

Homework 4: Due September 27 in class

  1. Read sections 2.2, 2.6.
  2. Go to the Liberal Studies homepage and raed the first two articles under "From the Newsroom". For both articles, summarize the main argument in a few sentences.
  3. Section 2.6, pages 88-89: Problems 3, 4, 9, 10, 17, 19, 20, 21.
  4. On the CST Released Test Questions for 5th Grade answer questions 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 93

 

Homework 3: Due September 20 in class

  1. Read sections 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5 in the textbook.
  2. Section 2.3, page 57: Problem 1, 5.
  3. Class Activity 2K. (You can make a copy of the page and show your work on it or copy the respective number lines by hand on a piece of paper.)
  4. Section 2.4, pages 65-68: Problems 5, 9, 11, 19, 20, 21, 23, 25, 26.
  5. Section 2.5 pages 76-78: Problems 3, 4.

 

Homework 2: Due September 13 in class

  1. Read sections 1.4, 2.1 and 2.2 in the textbook.
  2. Section 1.4, page 35: Problem 4.
  3. Class Activity 1R parts c,d,e,f,g. (You can make a copy of the page and show your work on it or copy the respective number lines by hand on a piece of paper.)
  4. Section 2.1, pages 45-48: Problems 2, 3, 5, 8, 12, 17.
  5. Find a standard in the Common Core Content Standards for Mathematics. which deals with basic understanding of fractions as we discussed in class Thursday.

  5. Find two standards in the Common Core Content Standards for Mathematics. for two different grade levels that deal with place value and/or decimals.
