Cultural Influences in Health Care

 

 

Purpose:

 

  1. To provide a general overview of culture and its effects on health care beliefs and practices.
  2. T o assist the student to develop an awareness of cultural diversity and its impact on patient care.
  3. To encourage the health professions student to assess their multicultural clients from the point of view of cultural competency.

 

Objectives:

 

Following participation in the session, the health professions student will be able to:

 

  1. Define current terms used to describe multicultural population groups including “culture, ethnicity, acculturation, assimilation, race, stereotype, and ethnocentrism”.
  2. Identify their own personal biases and stereotypes and how these might impact their various health professions practices.
  3. Identify at least four ways that health professions practitioners deal with difference as this relates to diverse population groups they encounter in their personal and professional lives.
  4. List and discuss the four basic components of cultural competence in health care.
