Cultural Influences in Health Care
Purpose:
- To provide a general overview of culture and its effects on health care beliefs and practices.
- T o assist the student to develop an awareness of cultural diversity and its impact on patient care.
- To encourage the health professions student to assess their multicultural clients from the point of view of cultural competency.
Objectives:
Following participation in the session, the health professions student will be able to:
- Define current terms used to describe multicultural population groups including “culture, ethnicity, acculturation, assimilation, race, stereotype, and ethnocentrism”.
- Identify their own personal biases and stereotypes and how these might impact their various health professions practices.
- Identify at least four ways that health professions practitioners deal with difference as this relates to diverse population groups they encounter in their personal and professional lives.
- List and discuss the four basic components of cultural competence in health care.
