Biography
Robert M. Huff, M.P.H., Ph.D., is a professor of Public Health Education in the Department of Health Sciences at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). He received his M.P.H. degree in Health Education from CSUN and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara in Confluent Education. Prior to joining the faculty at CSUN, he was a health education practitioner for the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles where he developed and managed hypertension control education and outreach programs for the Southeast Health Services region of Los Angeles County and designed and implemented a number of chronic disease patient education programs for Martin Luther King, Jr., General Hospital of Los Angeles. He then took a position with Ventura County Public Health Services and the Ventura County Medical Center. He designed and managed patient education programming for the medical center; consulted in the family practice residency program; organized and managed a video production facility where he produced a variety of patient, staff, and community education videotapes; co-developed and managed a county-wide health promotion center; and consulted on a variety of health education programs including chronic disease prevention, family life education, and HIV/AIDS awareness education and training programs for school and EMS personnel. He currently teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in Public Health Education and supervises graduate thesis and project work. He has been a consultant on a number of major projects focused on alcohol, drugs, and violence prevention among college-aged students; a youth wellness village project in the Ojai Valley of Ventura County,California; a violence prevention project for Ventura County Public Services; and a worksite wellness and health promotion program for the Sepulveda VA Medical Center.
Research Interests
His research interests combine his undergraduate training in anthropology with his graduate training in public health education and confluent education to focus on multicultural health promotion and disease prevention programs in a variety of health care settings. He is particularly interested in complimentary and alternative medicine, including folk medicine practices, shamanism, energy healing, and related traditional health care methodologies. He has been invited to make numerous presentations on cultural issues in health care, cultural competency, and the impact of traditional medicine on public health education practice.
