Summer grass

We arrived in Antarctica in the middle of summer. On Aitcho Island, one of the South Shetland Islands near the northernmost part of the Antarctic Peninsula, the winter snow had melted and luxuriant grass was covering the ground.

Neumeyer Channel

This photo, taken from our ship in the Neumeyer Channel, much farther south than the first photo, shows the ice- and snow-covered mountains that are more expected in a photo of Antarctica.

Chinstrap Penguin

Chinstrap Penguin and its chick found at Hannah Point on Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands.

Gentoo Penguin

Gentoo Penguin feeding its chick. Also seen at Hannah Point on Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands.

Adelie Penguin

Adelie Penguin and chick. This pair was photographed on Peterman Island in the Antarctic Peninsula. At 65 degrees, 10 minutes south latitude, this was the farthest south we could go on this tour.

Macaroni Penguin

Macaroni Penguin. Only three of these were seen on this trip. We found them at Hannah Point on Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands.

Elephant Seals

These Elephant Seals were found lounging on Aitcho Island, one of the South Shetland Islands. They were in the process of shedding their skin.

Skua and baby

This Skua likes to steal penguin eggs and eat very small baby penguin chicks. The penguin parents have to be very alert to keep their babies safe. Skua baby chicks, however, look cute and not very dangerous at all.

Wading in the Antarctic Ocean

Deception Island in the South Shetland Islands is a volcano. Here at Pendulum Cove, hot springs bubble to the surface right at the shoreline, making the ocean water warm enough to wade or swim in. One cannot venture too far from the shore, however, because the water turns very cold quickly where it is deeper.
