On his journey across the country, William Least Heat Moon stops in West
Texas to explore more closely the claims people make about the area. By
closely observing his surroundings, Moon learns something important.
Like Moon, you will go somewhere and closely
observe that place for ten
minutes. Pay close attention to all five of your senses: sight, taste,
smell, sound, touch. In your journal:
List everything you observed. Go back over your list several times in
order to elaborate on anything needful.
Later, look over your list and freewrite for five minutes, trying
to
focus on your list in some way.
Even later, re-read both your list and your first freewrite. Then
compose
a
second 5 minute freewrite beginning with, "What I meant to say was..."
Be ready to read your list and both freewrites in class.
You will start your observation assignment in your journal. Some of these will be read in class. When you post your observation on Canvas, include the list and the two freewrites.
Respond to two other writers by indicating what sense data (sight, taste, smell touch or taste) elicited the strongest response from you. Why?
