Fall 2011

Music Videos

The Music Videos offer a wide variety of choices. With the videos we will practice looking and listening. Again, we will be looking at how we are moved and persuaded by image and sound. The videos you choose may include a focus on the personal, or music-for-music's-sake; they may focus on a cultural issue or even political issues. I don't want to limit the choice too much because I want to see what the people in the class are interested in.

For example: I have had several students write about the history of rap. This history includes background on the emergence of rap in urban America as a political event or cultural critique. Most of these papers began and ended with rap in America. I might then take a look at the rise of rap as a political movement throughout the world. In this case I would probably choose a music video from another country that best exemplifies the power of rap and the images presented. This is just an example. There are many genres of music.

Choose what intrigues you most. The class will be watching the videos .
