This I Believe
I believe that a good attitude goes a long way. I have faced
a life challenge that could easily have interfered with my optimism and
way of being. At the age of six, I was diagnosed with Type I Insulin
Dependent Diabetes and hospitalized at Children's Hospital. Not only
did I learn that I had an incurable disease, but I was taught the
daunting daily routine of Type I diabetes. This involves testing my
blood sugar and injecting insulin shots in my stomach multiple times a
day. Although both of these procedures are unpleasant and painful, I have
chosen to treat them as minor inconveniences, rather than major
obstacles. Instead of becoming a barrier, living with diabetes has
actually motivated me to help others and live life to the fullest. I
realize the value of doctors and nurses in restoring my health; I
treasure my friends and family even more for helping me take a positive
outlook. In sum, living with diabetes has doubled my appreciation for
even the little things in life, and filled me with a strong sense of
optimism that I know I will always have. Diabetes has helped me grow as a
person, because it has taught me how to put life's obstacles in the
right perspective and use it as a way of connecting with people
struggling through similar things as I am today. With a good attitude and
optimistic outlook on life, I know I can overcome anything.
