This I Believe
This I believe that all animals should be free of being research
subjects. Animals are living creatures that should not be seen as the
property of science just because a scientist wants to test a new theory.
Though I understand that animals are tested instead of human beings,
there should be a strict guide of rules and rights for these animals who
cannot simply speak for themselves. Animals are used in laboratory
settings for teaching, product safety, and education. From hunting to
puppy mills to using animals' fur for luxurious clothing, those animals
has absolutely no say in their destiny. As a society we must believe that
animals are not subjects, rather we should view them as a part of our
very society as well. Animals should be eased of their pains in these
settings and alternate methods should be assumed. The thought of
refraining scientists from using any animals for medical testing might
sound shocking but it is humane. We must learn to treat animals for what
they are; living creatures who observe, feel, and hear many of the same
things as humans do, even if they do not interpret it in the same manner
that we might. Animal rights should also come into play with such
infamous cases as the Michael Vick dog-fighting case. Vick was not the
first or last person to break the law, so we must ensure that these
animals be protected under similar laws as to the ones human kind has for
themselves. Farm animals at farming animal mills where animals are kept
under horrible conditions and packed into cages and corals and are
mistreated for no reason should also be protected under similar animals
rights laws. Although some animals are a source of food for humans, that
gives us no right to abuse these animals and what they offer. Animals
should be protected under their own set of laws and animal activists are
working very hard in order to enforce these laws world wide.
