Barahona has arrived.
Barahona says, "hi"
ojar says, "Hola"
ojar says, "we're alone ;("
Barahona says, "i actually read the katz article"
ojar says, "LOL"
Barahona says, "she told me to come here so we can compare the two lol"
Barahona says, "so yea"
ojar says, "well, grossman pretty much talks about how the power of the internet will be used in congress"
ojar says, "and in the voting process"
ojar says, "there's this one funny part because it was written in 1995 back when cellphones were new brand new technology"
Barahona says, "katz tended to talk about in the beggining his own adventures in the net when dealing with politics"
ojar says, "dang im tryin to find a specific sentence"
ojar says, "well i cant seem to find it"
ojar says, "but i thought it was funny because he kinda talks about how the internet is gonna be portable"
Barahona says, "the digital nation according to katz is not a true representation of the whole population"
ojar says, "and that people are going to be able to use devices to instantaneously send each other written letters (text messages)"
ojar says, "video conferencse (video phones)"
Barahona says, "haha all of that already is in play"
ojar says, "yeah that was the funny part"
ojar says, "since his article was written in 1995"
ojar says, "he was speaking of the future, yet with our generation, it's already here"
Barahona says, "yea i know, and it seems that we tend to be really dependant on it"
ojar says, "yeah, but in short grossman feels that the future is gonna evolve into an electronic republic"
Barahona says, "with katz, most of it dealt with the politics of it "
ojar says, "in which "citizens will use keypad democracy to tell their president, senators, members of congress, and local leaders what they want them to do and in what priority order""
ojar says, ""but the touch of a button.""
Thu Feb 24 13:31:50 2005 PST
Barahona says, "he stated that in 96 much of the media covering the election was sort of afraid to use the net as a source"
Barahona says, "also how the net is really more about free speech than in the media"
Barahona says, "well the media as in tv and stuff"
ojar says, "i'd agree with that"
Barahona says, "me too"
ojar says, "the tv and media tends to dramatize things and create propaganda"
Barahona says, "its a lot harder to control what goes on in a website, the media has strict guidelines even tho its suppose to show freedom of speech"
ojar says, "yep"
ojar says, "oh an interesting thing in grossman's article was his introduction"
ojar says, "it started off with an amendment that was going to be passed in 1994"
Barahona says, "you now have politicians who are finding it easier to raise funds via a website than it is to go and ask for it to the people directly"
ojar says, "about homeschools"
ojar says, "basically, the amendment that was going to be passed stated that"
Barahona says, "homeschooling is a bad thing imo"
ojar says, "any teacher must require specific credentials for whatever subject they teach"
Barahona says, "thats hard to do in homeschooling when its usually a parent in charge"
ojar says, "and since it would be impossible for hometeachers to acquire those credentials, they went to congress about it"
ojar says, "normally the bill would've been passed with a vote of 424 to 1"
ojar says, "424 people saying "pass the amendment" and 1 person saying "no dont pass that amendment""
Barahona says, "yea"
ojar says, "but what happened was a homeschool teacher used the internet"
ojar says, "as a political tool"
ojar says, "and gathered peopole to create a "virtual community""
ojar says, "and since word got out, it spread like the black plague over the net"
Barahona says, "easier way to get the guaranteed freedom of speech"
ojar says, "and all these homeschool teachers across america got together"
ojar says, "and in the end the amendment was trashed because it was such an uproar for homeschool teachers"
ojar says, "so grossman was pretty much referring to how powerful the internet can really be, and how people can use it as a political tool"
Barahona says, "thats good "
Barahona says, "yea now a days its a major political tool"
ojar says, "i didn't FULLY understand the rest of the article because i don't follow politics AT ALL"
ojar says, "but that's the main gist of the article imo"
Barahona says, "mkay"
Barahona says, "its interesting to see tho how big of a tool the net is in politics"
+------------------------------------------+
Barahona holds up a big sign: | main topic: the net being a tool in |
| politics |
+------------------------------------------+
ojar says, "that works"
Barahona says, "bye"
ojar says, "ta-ta"
ojar has disconnected.
