We, Too, Sing America

Course Description and Format
English 097 is designed to help you develop reading skills and strategies so that you will be prepared to succeed in English 098. This course offers an intensive study of college level reading and writing skills, focusing on gathering and understanding information, evaluating how writers seek to persuade readers. This course will:

Enhance your ability to interpret college - level reading in the disciplines, including multicultural texts.

Demystify the reading/writing process and build upon the skills you have already developed.

Improve your ability to organize information and ideas through reading, writing, and discussion.

Help you to produce writing which demonstrates appropriate grammar, sentence structure, and usage, reflecting the mature thinking of a college student.

Help you to understand the impact of language use in a multi-cultural society and to recognize the effects of biased language on readers and writers.

Introduce you to online learning communites: discussions and practice in online "netiquette," the use of email, discussion lists and research data bases.
This course focuses on the close relationship of the reading/writing process: pre-writing, and pre-reading, drafting, revising. Much of class time will be spent discussing, writing, and working in small groups, both offline and online. Students are encouraged to use the resources of the Learning Resource Center.

- Cover Letter
- One in-class timed writing (unrevised)
- One summary and response (revised, edited)
- One Annotated text
- One text based paper (revised, edited)

Journal: consists of various writing
assignments, summaries and responses to all articles,
reading logs, homework
and in class work. Collected randomly.

Conferencing and Office Hours: One office
conference (TBA) is required,
and all students are strongly urged to come by my office as confusion,
problems, questions arise. The sharing of positive writing experience is
also permitted. My office (ST821) is located in Sierra Tower next to the Jerome Richfield
