highfivinwhiteguy holds up a big sign: | sassoon |
                                       +---------------------------------+

lacubrious23 asks, "hello?"
CASS says, "hey"
highfivinwhiteguy says, "whats up"
CASS says, "so yeah, about that poem..."
lacubrious23 says, "haha"
highfivinwhiteguy says, "did you read it"
Landen's*Mom says, "do you want to talk about the first one"
CASS says, "yeah i read it"
lacubrious23 asks, "which one are we going to talk about, the suicide in the trenches one?"
CASS says, "yeah go for it"
Landen's*Mom says, "yeah lets just start there"
lacubrious23 says, "ok so I guess I'll start"
CASS says, "k"
highfivinwhiteguy says, "cool"
lacubrious23 says, "I thought it was interesting some of the phrases Sassoon would use, like "empty joy""
CASS says, "i was just thinking about that too"
highfivinwhiteguy says, "ya"
lacubrious23 says, "he also describes the boy soldier as "simple""
CASS says, "it's so depressing...yuck"
lacubrious23 says, "it's not a word you'd normally use to describe someone who goes through something like a war"
Landen's*Mom says, "I know this was very depressing"
Landen's*Mom says, "I know that is weird"
CASS says, "that's true"
lacubrious23 asks, "what else did you notice about the poem?"
Landen's*Mom says, "at the end of the peom it is interesting what her says about how people pray that they will never know the hell where youth and laughter go"
Mon Sep 27 11:35:51 2004 PDT
Landen's*Mom says, "they admire the soldiers for what they are doing but they are so happy they are not in their situation"
lacubrious23 asks, "yea, I saw that too, why youth and laughter?"
lacubrious23 says, "why not youth and something else"
Landen's*Mom says, "maybe that is where their youth and laughter is left"
Landen's*Mom says, "at the war"
lacubrious23 says, "I'd have thought that you leave more than just youth and laughter"
highfivinwhiteguy says, "ya, and sassoon is saying men are scared from war"
Landen's*Mom says, "they go to the war as young boys and all that they go through forces them to grow up"
CASS says, "that's an interesting point"
Landen's*Mom says, "when at war you have to be strong"
Landen's*Mom says, "many people can't do it"
Landen's*Mom says, "they give up"
Landen's*Mom says, "they don't have anything "
lacubrious23 says, "especially becuase this war was the war of new technology "
highfivinwhiteguy says, "its just to hard to cope with for some"
lacubrious23 says, "there was all kinds of warfare that people had never used in war before"
Landen's*Mom says, "yeah"
highfivinwhiteguy says, "4sure"
lacubrious23 says, "and so lots more died than had ever during a war before"
Landen's*Mom says, "and it didn't help that they knew that they didn't have much support from the people back in America"
lacubrious23 says, "but what's different about this is that he wasn't killed by these new weapons, he killed himself"
CASS says, "yeah, to free himself "
lacubrious23 says, "perhaps knowing about the lack of support in america contributed to this"
Landen's*Mom says, "he probably figured that he was going to die anyway"
Landen's*Mom says, "why not stop the suffering now"
lacubrious23 says, "you can't know that you're going to die"
CASS says, "and even if he got out of the war alright, maybe he didn't want to live with all that crap in his life from the war"
lacubrious23 says, "perhaps"
Landen's*Mom says, "but in a situation like that he was probably figured he didn't have a chance"
lacubrious23 says, "ok"
lacubrious23 says, "next poem"
lacubrious23 says, "shoot, nevermind"
Landen's*Mom says, "everyone around him was dying"
