ACCULTURATION: Process of choosing to learn cultural change or learn another culture

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

AGE-STAGE LINKAGE: Mistaken belief that children's ages are necessarily connected with certain stages (e.g., all adolescents are . . . all 5 year old can do . . . )

ASSIMILATION

COMPENSATORY EDUCATION: Means of helping educationally disadvantaged children of poor and ethnic minorities to acquire necessary cognitive, academic and social skills.

CONTINUITY/DISCONTINUITY

CULTURAL DEPRIVATION: Belief that families who are culturally different or poor are unable to provide their children with adequate language, perceptual, and other cognitive experiences to succeed in school and in modern society

DEFICIT MODEL: Notion that what is different is inferior or pathological in nature (e.g., African American dialect may be viewed as inferior to Standard English; children may be seen as inferior or inadequate adults)

NEO-MARXIST THEORY: Societies perpetuate social and economic inequities and the privileged upper class maintains these inequities by controlling the lower class through non-economic means of domination; the class differences are maintained by teaching common cultures, styles of language, manners, conversational topics, values, and preferences of all kinds to the upper-class children

PARADIGM

POSTMODERNISM/POSTSTRUCTURALISM: Perspective that denies that there is an objective and real basis for knowledge and truth; postmodernist argue that there are many ways of knowing and that truth and meaning are constructed and reconstructed as societies and social structures change, insisting that the meanings that have been taken for granted should be deconstructed
