Assessment Procedures
Special Education 670, Reading Processes
The purpose of this assignment is to administer, score, and interpret results from the Qualitative Reading Inventory - 3. Findings are to be summarized in a written report using the following outline. Attach all completed protocols to the report.
I. Background Information
Begin the report with a brief description of the student, including present grade in school, age, and reason for assessment. Summarize information regarding reading interests, family literacy, and parental concerns, and school experiences.
II. Assessment for Identification of Reading Problem
A. Assessment of Reading Potential (Listening Comprehension)
Use the graded passage(s) in the informal reading inventory to determine the students listening comprehension level.
B. Entry-Level Assessment
Using word lists from the informal inventory estimate reading achievement.
III. Assessment for Verifying General Reading Level
Determine approximate independent, instructional, and frustration levels from the QRI. Report word recognition and reading comprehension scores for each passage read. In this section also compare word identification in context with reading comprehension.
Following the outlined comparisons provided on page 88 of the QRI-3 address each of the following questions.
How accurate is the student in identifying words?
How automatic is the student in identifying words?
What strategies for word identification in context are used by the student?
(Complete a miscue analysis, include results in discussion of strategies.)
Is there a difference between a student's ability to identify words in isolation and words in context?
B. Comprehension
Which types of text can the student handle most successfully?
Which modes of reading represent a strength for the student?
How does the student perform in familiar and unfamiliar text?
How does the student perform with look-backs and without look-backs?
What comprehension strategies does the student employ while reading?
In this section briefly summarize the results. Include interpretation of results and implications for instruction, and address the extent of the student's reading problem.
Appendices
Include all testing protocols (word lists, passages administered, and miscue analysis).
Procedures will be evaluated for appropriateness and completeness of administration, and accuracy of scoring. Each section of the report will be evaluated for thoroughness, clarity, and accuracy of interpretation. Points will be deducted for spelling and grammar errors.
