FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

APPLICATION PROCESS:

For your information, CSUN has an ON-LINE APPLICATION. If you prefer to have an application sent to you by mail, contact the Graduate Coordinator.

START DATES:

You can enroll in classes once Admissions and Records has received the application and you have been assigned a File Number. The official notice of acceptance often comes after the assignment of the File Number so that you can register for classes even though you might not have received an official notice of acceptance. If not, you can enroll in chemistry classes through EXTENSION if you wish.

AFTER ADMISSION:

Required Chemistry Proficiency Exams (Review Topics) (for scheduling of exams, see below)
GRE is required if undergraduate GPA is less than 3.0
UDWE: Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam may be required before classification
PROGRESS WORKSHEETS:

REQUIRED CHEMISTY PROFICIENCY EXAMS:

On the website of the Graduate Coordinator are listed the dates/times of the Required Chemistry Proficiency Exams. These are standardized, multiple choice exams from the Americal Chemical Society. You take them using a pencil darkening a circle for the answer you think is correct. Your answers are compared to a special key provided by the Society. There are no essay portions. Also there are no sample tests available. If you want to study for these exams, review your textbooks for these three areas: Organic, Inorganic, and Physical chemistry (Review Topics).
Students working in industry on an approved project with an industry sponsor and a CSUN advisor can earn a MS Degree in Chemistry from CSUN. However the project cannot be proprietary because all MS theses are made public through the library. Students find a suitable project approved by both CSUN Chemistry Department and the Industry as well as a suitable industry advisor and CSUN advisor. The student submits a proposal to the Department (one or two pages is adequate with several references) outlining the project. The Industry sponsor is required to write a letter to the Department confirming the industry committment in terms of laboratory space, resources, supplies, time off for travel to CSUN for courses, etc.
