Part 12

16th Annual Santa Barbara

Kite Festival, March 19, 2000

L-R: Lashley & David Tan, Johnny & Michelle
What a great day it was at Shore Line Park in beautiful Santa Barbara, CA. Sunny skies, warm temps, and light breezes, that is until the Cutting Line competition began
the 2nd round of eliminations, then it was strong winds
for a while, making it tough on the fighters.

The local FOX t.v. channel, and a local Radio Station were  'Hosts' of the Festival, along with Rakesh and the Kite Store, Come Fly A Kite.

The 1st and 2nd place Winners of the Scheduled events received plaques, and the 1st place winner also received a 'gift' of some sort. (i.e. Movie tickets, Palm Springs resort weekend, even a Lava Light)

Highest flying Kite - Fliers were given 30 seconds to let out as much line as they could.
1st Place - Johnny Hsiung flying one of his own silver mylar fighters
2nd place went to one of Rakesh's nephews(?) who was flying an Indian fighter too.

Fighter Kites - Cutting Line Competition Winners (L-R):
2nd Place - Johnny Hsiung,  1st Place - Michael Wolf, a newbie fighter,
who was blessed with extremely good luck at the very last moment!

Most Beautiful Kite Winner -
2nd Place - Charlie M'Clary,
flying the Double Roses Delta kite that belonge to his wife Joann.

Here's Charlie being interviewd
during a "Live" broadcast by one the Radio DJ's.

Food and Toy booths are in the background. There was an Indian food booth which sold tempting curries, naan, samosas, sweets, etc., and another booth that sold pizza and soft drinks. A Coffee booth, and a 'Blenders' fruit drinks booth were there too.

Rakesh flew many, many times during the day for the "Tail grab" events for the kids. He flew Indian fighters with a tissue tail attached and the kids tried to grab the tail.

The kids were separated into age groups, beginning with the two year olds, and there were even one or two events for the "Older Kids" (the adults).

Even the Mayor of Santa Barbara got out there and almost grabbed the tail at one point. What a good sport she was!  Winners received  prizes donated by the Toy store who had a booth there.
