In this workshop we will discuss the difference between normal protective anxiety and the anxiety disorders. We will begin by learning how to differentiate between obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias, generalized anxiety, agoraphobia, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. We will also discuss the comorbidity
between anxiety and depression, determining which should be the primary focus in treatment. Anxiety prevention in children and the role of anxiety in adolescents and the elderly will also be featured. The majority of the session will be on appropriate interventions and treatment, including cognitive/behavioral, supportive psychotherapy, imagery and mindfulness, role play, exposure/response prevention, relaxation techniques, and reframing risk taking. Self-help strategies, the role of secondary gain, compassion and loving humor will also be taught. You will receive a tool kit of techniques to help clients empower themselves.
