What They Are

I will give the class a number without saying what it means...: They are the numbers in the yellow column, in the table below.; Known details about each number will be added to the table below, starting 24 hours after the number is announced.
...at nine (9) predetermined but unannounced times during the semester.: They could be announced in lectures or labs, by email or on the website, or even hidden in lecture notes or assignments.; Announcements vary so that those with laptops, net access at home, or in a given lab aren't the only ones with a shot.
Each is a measurement of some aspect of the class, a value for which I haven't given you the variable or case.: It could be a count (e.g. 9 homework assignments), or it could be a label (e.g. 184 is the lecture classroom).; None of them are page numbers, numbers of pages, or chapter numbers.; None of them are due dates, although some (also) count due dates (e.g. 9 HW assignments would have 9 due dates).; Most also somehow relate to or illustrate content of the course, such as an idea from a lecture or assignment - but probably not in an obvious way, so that's probably not helpful. Nevermind. :)

Each of the first five students...: "First" is defined by date/time (as shown in my inbox) of an email sent to me with the correct meaning of the number.; Only the first five correct answers for each number will get credit. No exceptions!; You may work in a group, but must email individually. Only the sender will get credit.
...to send me an email...: Don't ask me about an answer face-to-face; someone else might hear and email first.; You have until midnight before the last class meeting, during which I'll explain any that remain unsolved.
...with the correct identification of each mystery measurement...: You don't get credit for telling me what the numbers themselves are. I've given them to you, and they'll be posted here. You need to figure them out what they are measurements of.; It's a game, or a mystery, or a treasure hunt, but with a statistical focus: here are 9 values, what were the variables?
...gets 1% extra credit added to their final semester grade.: No student can get more than one per semester (so, up to 45 of the 48 of you could get one!)

They address routine requests for "extra credit", which I won't create on post hoc or individual bases (since that would be unfair).
They provide an extra incentive to get involved with the text, lecture notes, assignments, course structure, and other course materials.
They reward (as extra credit should) superlative engagement with the course, in ways and to a degree not recognized by the requirements.
They add emphasis to the general focus of the course (systematic measurement), since each is a measurement of some aspect of the course.
They attempt to add an element of levity, an invitation to ingenuity, and an opportunity for investigation - aspects that attract me to Sociology.
They represent a course design that attempts to be fully integrated, and heavily embedded with alternatives routes to learning.
