Information on declaring a major or a minor is available in the College of Business and Economics Office of Student Services and Advisement (OSSA) in JH 2113. The form is here.

Note: There has been a system wide change in the rules for double majors. Students may now double major even if one major offers a BA and the other a BS.

If you are a business major, see below. If you are not a business major and you would like advice as to which economics classes would complement your major field of study, contact the Economics Department Chair, Professor Shirley Svorny

The rule at CSUN is that you can't count GE classes in your major field toward GE requirements, but courses that you take for your minor or a second major may double count to fulfill the campus GE requirements.

Economics Minor requirements double count towards the following Majors + Business Administration options (see extended discussion below):

Finance
Management
Marketing
Business Administration:
Option in Business Law
Option in Financial Services
Option in Real Estate

FINANCE: ECON 310 double counts toward your Breadth and Perspective Course Requirements if you have selected the Finance or Real Estate options.

Financial Services: ECON 311 double counts if you have selected the Financial Services option.
These courses also count towards the Minor in Economics. If you still need upper division GE credit, both 310 and 311 earn upper division GE credit in the Social Sciences category. If you take either 310 or 311, you would then need three additional economics classes to complete the minor (310 is required). Economics courses that are particularly complementary to Finance include:

Macro/Finance:
ECON 311 Money, Banking and the Federal Reserve
ECON 401 Macroeconomic Theory
ECON 405 International Economics

Data and Forecasting:

ECON 309 The Use and Interpretation of Data
ECON 409 Introduction to Econometrics

Industry Structure:

ECON 310 Intermediate Price Theory
ECON 410 Industrial Organization

International:

ECON 405 International Economics

MANAGEMENT: ECON 308 (required of students selecting the Management Option) also counts toward the Minor in Economics AND, for management majors only, toward upper division general education credit. This means you have only three additional courses to take to earn a Minor in Economics. One of the three must be ECON 310. If you still need upper division GE credit, ECON 310, 311 and 360 earn upper division GE credit in Social Sciences. Economics courses that are particularly complementary to Management include:

ECON 309 The Use and Interpretation of Data
ECON 311 Money, Banking and the Federal Reserve
ECON 320 Labor Economics
ECON 409 Introduction to Econometrics
ECON 360 Environmental Economics (also earns upper division GE credit)
ECON 405 International Economics
ECON 401 Macroeconomic Theory
ECON 410 Industrial Organization
ECON 355 Health Economics (if you have an interest in working in the Healthcare Industry)

MARKETING: For you, either ECON 307 or ECON 309 double count. Either may count toward the Marketing Option and toward the Minor in Economics. For marketing majors only, ECON 307 earns upper division general education credit. Three additional courses are required to earn a Minor in Economics. One is ECON 310. If you still need upper division GE credit, ECON 310 and 311 earn upper division GE credit in the Social Sciences category. Courses that are particularly complementary to Marketing include:

ECON 309 The Use and Interpretation of Data
ECON 350 Urban Economics (includes location theory relevant to marketing)
ECON 360 Environmental Economics (earns credit towards upper division GE)
ECON 405 International Economics
ECON 409 Introduction to Econometrics
ECON 410 Industrial Organization (this course explains pricing strategies for competitive and less than competitive industries)

BUSINESS LAW: Either ECON 365 (Law and Economics) OR 411 (Antitrust and Regulation) satisfy three units of credit toward the "Required Courses for the Option in Business Law." In addition, you may take 3 units in Economics to satisfy the "Business Breadth Requirement" in your major. ECON 310, 311 and 360 earn upper division General Education Credit, and count towards the Minor in Economics. To summarize, if you have taken 365 or 411, two GE courses (310 and either 311 or 360), you would need only one more course to earn a minor in Economics. Courses that are particularly complementary to Business Law include:

ECON 365 Law and Economics
ECON 411 The Economics of Antitrust and Regulation
ECON 320 Labor Economics
ECON 405 International Economics
ECON 360 Environmental Economics
ECON 311 Money, Banking and the Federal Reserve
