1. Do you think that creativity is part of human nature or is it something Yes to both; creativity is indeed part of human nature (although it is clearly not unique to humans) and it is also something that grows if it is nurtured. And, in some sense, it can also be learned: one form of creativity is “putting old ideas together in new ways”, and that is facilitated if you have a large bag of old ideas to draw upon. 2. What made you decide to follow a creative career choice (though possibly Stable is in the eye of the beholder. My day job for 15 years was in the high-tech industry of Silicon Valley, which is famous for business cycles, layoffs, buyouts, and shutdowns. It’s not at all clear that origami was destined to be less stable. It was very clear that it was a lot more fun!
I am inspired by nature, mathematics, and other artists. My background as a theoretical physicist gave me a toolkit with which to approach the technical aspects of origami; my love of nature has led me to many of my subjects. 4. What is your favorite creation? Please explain why you selected this one. At the moment, it’s the series of pots I’ve been developing, because they are deceptively difficult to fold but conceptually quite simple to imagine. 5. What do you wish to accomplish with your art? To never stop creating new and interesting works. 6. How do you know when a piece or project is finished and needs no additonal They are never finished. However, after I’ve folded a piece, I might decide that there’s nothing I can think of to add to it at the moment. 7. Have you ever been faced with negative feedback? How was this reflected in Of course since art is a matter of taste, I’ve encountered people whose taste doesn’t run in the same directions as mine, and some of them have let me know that via negative feedback. I don’t think it really has much effect on what I do; I’m my own harshest critic, I think, so I focus on trying to satisfy my own ideas of what I should be accomplishing (and so rarely do). 8. What impact do you think that commercialism and the media has had on your Commercial jobs usually ask for subjects or approaches that I wouldn’t have attempted on my own. Sometimes that has led me into interesting directions. 9. Are you a fan of cartoons? If so, what is your favorite one? Yes, The Simpsons. 10. What is playing in your CD player/Ipod right now? I’m listening to KXPR via the Internet. They just started “Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme Suite, opus 60”, by Richard Strauss. 11. If you had to be any of these things, which would you like to be? a) a Since only one of those is a reasoning sentient being, I’d have to go with “a member of the opposite sex.” Thinking is good.
Catching up with old friends and acquaintances, probably. Perhaps a little folding. Maybe a prank phone call or two. |
