WOLF'S COMPATIBILISM

The Plain Deep Self View

The Plain Deep Self View of Responsibility = X is responsible for its actions iff: (1) X is able to govern its actions by its desires; and (2) X is able to govern its desires by its deep self.

Superficial Self = the desires/motivations that govern (i.e., directly determine) my actions (= my will).

Deep Self = the desires/evaluations which govern my superficial self (will).

You're responsible for your actions only if (a) your actions are determined by (i.e., depend on) your will (i.e., you're able to do what you want to do), and (b) your will is determined by (i.e., is dependent on) your deep self (i.e., what you want to do is what you want to want to do).  Fulfilling condition (a) satisfies the condition of free action; fulfilling condition (b) satisfies the condition of free will.

So what this theory says is that we're responsible when we can step back and revise what we don't like about our superficial selves.

So why, on this theory, do we not hold klepto's/hypnotics/the brainwashed responsible for their actions?

And why do we not hold infants/animals/machines responsible?

What of Jo Jo?  The Plain Deep Self View says that Jo Jo is responsible, i.e., should be blamed.

The Sane Deep Self View

The Sane Deep Self View of Responsibility = Conditions 1 & 2 of the Plain Deep Self View, and (3) X's deep self is sane.

X is sane iff (1) X has the ability to recognize (moral) right and wrong; and (2) X has the ability to recognize other facts in the world besides facts about what's right and wrong.

Condition (1) = normative sanity

Condition (2) = cognitive sanity

Self-Correction

A metaphysical truth: it's impossible for anyone to create his/her deepest self.

X can self-correct iff (1) X has the ability to evaluate him/herself accurately (with respect to what's morally good), and (2) X has the ability to transform his/her superficial self according to his/her self-evaluation.

Planted Objections

Objection: any wrong action will count as evidence of insanity.  But that's absurd.

Wolf's reply:

Deeper Objections
