1. Do you think that creativity is part of human nature or is it something that must be nurtured and learned? Please explain your answer.
Yes. Without creativity, there is no way anyone could have thought to rub two sticks together in order to create fire. No way they could have thought to use horses to plow a field. No way to think up the internal combustion engine. Creativity has always been around, whether it is to come up with practical devices to make life easier or to simply entertain and make people forget about the weariness of everyday life -- which, in turn, can make life easier. :)
2. What made you decide to follow a creative career choice (though possibly risky) rather than something more stable?
None of the other career choices that offered a more stable choice seemed interesting, or even tolerable. I had a semi-office job for about 9 months. It was intolerable.
3. What is your inspiration?
Movies, largely. I am inspired by movies. I like to write the kinds of movies I want to go see. And also by writing. Stephen King can inspire me to write. The news inspires me. And usually whatever job I have at the moment inspires me. People.
How has personal experience influenced your creativity?
In all of my scripts there is some degree for autobiography.
4. What is your favorite creation? Please explain why you selected this one. A favorite creation. This is hard. I do not think I can pick a single one. I can narrow it down to 3 or 5. The Pizza Guy, My High School Crush, Los Chupacabras; the short stories Hank the Suicidal Pigeon and Rest In Peace; and the first 50 pages of my book. Even trying to think of drawings and other stuff I used to do to narrow it to one. I can think of 2 drawings I really, really like...
5. What do you wish to accomplish with your art? I want to make everyone in the world laugh out loud at least once, be it with something I wrote or something that was made into a movie. It may not be much, but for that single moment when the people laugh, the troubles that plague them will be forgotten for just a bit.
6. How do you know when a piece or project is finished and needs no additional work?
When it feels done.
7. Have you ever been faced with negative feedback? How was this reflected in your work, if at all?
Negative feedback, yes. The negative feedback was not reflected but the constructive criticism was.
8. What impact do you think that commercialism and the media has had on your work? Is this good or bad?
Not sure if I understand the question, but I'll give it a shot. I like mainstream, commercial movies. Those are the kind of movies I like to see and like to write. Media? Well, with the recent shark attack in San Diego and all the media coverage it gets, I want to go back to my book.
9. Are you a fan of cartoons? If so, what is your favorite one?
Yes. King of the Hill.
10. What is playing in your CD player/Ipod right now?
The TV is on. The Simpson. But last night I was listening to R.E.M., and Jesus Christ Superstar. What's the frequency, Kenneth?
11. If you had to be any of these things, which would you like to be? a) a member of the opposite sex, b) a clock, c) a pair of shoes, d) a duck
Please explain your choice.
A clock. Or a woman. Then I would know what it is like to always be stared at.
12. If you only had 24 hours to live, how would you spend your day?
I would not spend it writing. Some say that is a lack of passion. I say it is realism. I am sure I would write a bit, but writing is a solitary activity, and on my last day, I would want to do something with friends. I would drink beer. Spend a lot on a good bottle of bordeaux. I would eat as many cheeseburgers as I could. Maybe even a few pizzas. Eclairs. Ice Cream. Cherry Coke. Banana split. But let's not split hairs. All of that would be fine and dandy, but I am pretty sure if I had only 24 hrs left, a good portion of that would be dedicated to getting laid one last time. (Not having sex. There is a slight bit more connotation of a relationship in the words having sex than there is in getting laid.) Call me a pig, I'm just saying I would try a lot more aggressively on that day than I otherwise would in normal everyday life. Not the most creative thing a supposedly creative person could offer for their last 24, but it is the truth.
